Preparing for your first conversation

A few useful questions to consider before speaking to a solicitor.

General process guide · 26 October 2026

Start with the broad outline

Think about what has happened, what you need help with and what you hope to achieve. Keep an initial website enquiry brief. Wait for the firm to explain a suitable way to share documents or sensitive information.

Make a short question list

You might ask who would look after the work, how updates would be shared and what the next stage could involve. Mention any communication or access needs so the firm can discuss arrangements.

Understand what happens next

Ask how the firm will confirm whether it can act, explain the scope and set out costs. A first conversation is a chance to understand the proposed service before deciding whether to proceed.
