Understanding your written scope

What to ask about the work, the updates and the costs before you proceed.

General process guide · 26 October 2026

Be clear about the proposed work

A written scope helps you understand what the firm is proposing to do. Read it alongside any terms sent to you, and ask about anything you do not understand before agreeing to proceed.

Ask about the cost information

Ask which work is included, what is excluded and how other costs would be explained. If a figure is an estimate, ask what could lead to a change and how you would be told.

Know who to contact

Keep the contact details for the person responsible for your matter. Agree how you would receive updates and how to raise a question or concern.

General information only. This fictional practice provides no legal advice. A real solicitor would need to understand your circumstances before advising you.
